Overview
Chickenpox is very contagious. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It causes a blister-like rash, itching, fatigue and fever. Rash can spread over the entire body and cause hundreds of itchy blisters.
Chickenpox can be serious—especially in babies, adults and people with weakened immune systems. The best way to prevent chickenpox is to get vaccinated.
Chickenpox is not a notifiable condition.
Providers typically do not need to report chickenpox.
Schools, childcare centers and congregate living facilities must report outbreaks. Call the reporting line: (360) 678-2301, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. After hours: call (360) 678-7270 or Washington State Department of Health (206) 418-5500.
